Talaria 72V Upgrade: Stages, Controllers, Packs and Cooling
What moving a Sting MX3 or MX4 from 60V to 72V actually changes, broken into three upgrade stages, with battery and controller options, thermal requirements and the warranty trade-off.
The 60V platform under the Sting MX3 and MX4 is deliberately conservative. It is tuned for heat headroom, battery life and predictable delivery, which is exactly what most riders want and exactly what some riders eventually outgrow. Moving to 72V is the standard answer, and it is a well-trodden path with off-the-shelf parts. It is also frequently misunderstood. This guide sets out what the voltage change actually does, the three sensible stages of upgrade, and what each one costs you in warranty terms.
Where the stock bikes start
Worth fixing the baseline before talking about gains, because the two 60V Stings are not the same machine.

What 72V changes, and what it does not
Raising pack voltage raises the electrical ceiling the controller can work against. That shows up as more peak power and more speed, not as more shove off the line.
- Peak power: higher, with the size of the gain set by the controller you pair with the pack rather than by the voltage alone.
- Top speed: up, by an amount that depends on gearing and rider weight.
- Climbing: a clear improvement on sustained grades.
- Range: similar or slightly reduced, because the extra performance is drawn from the same energy budget.
- Heat: higher, which is the part most riders under-plan for.
What 72V does not deliver is more torque from a standstill. Bottom-end pull is set by the motor’s design and by current, not by pack voltage, so a bike that felt soft crawling over a rock ledge at 60V will feel much the same at 72V. If low-speed grunt is the complaint, gearing and a higher-current controller are the levers to pull, not voltage alone.
Treat any specific power figure quoted for an aftermarket combination as the kit supplier’s claim rather than a manufacturer specification, and expect the real result to depend on your gearing, tyres, weight and how well the electronics are cooled.
Stage 1: controller only
Keep the 60V pack and fit a higher-output controller such as the EBMX X-9000 V2 or the KO Moto Rush. The gain here is in throttle response and mapping rather than in raw ceiling; without more voltage behind it the top end has not moved. Stage 1 is worth doing on its own if your complaint is a lazy or vague throttle, and it is a sensible first half of a two-part plan if the battery purchase has to wait.
Stage 2: battery and controller together
This is the path most riders take. A packaged kit such as the EBMX Talaria Upgrade Kit 72V 57A pairs the pack, the BAC8000 controller and a matching 72V charger, so voltage, current rating and charging behaviour are specified together rather than assembled by guesswork. The harness plugs into the stock Talaria frame.
EBMX puts the install at 3 to 5 hours for an experienced mechanic, and fitment covers TL3000, TL4000, TL45 and TL50. For a rider splitting time between trail and track, Stage 2 is the sweet spot: a genuinely different bike, without the thermal and traction problems that come with pushing further.
Stage 3: full power kit
The EBMX X-9000 Power Kit bundles the X-9000 V2 controller, its matching heat sink and the install harness. Run behind an EBMX high-capacity pack, EBMX rates the combination at up to 15 kW peak.
Stage 3 changes how the whole bike must be set up. Tyre choice, suspension damping and rider fitness all become limiting factors before the powertrain does. Do not fit it and expect the stock cooling to cope unchanged.

Note the gap in that table. There is no off-the-shelf pack that combines the highest voltage with the largest capacity in the Talaria case; riders who want both need a custom build rather than a kit purchase. Decide which one you actually ride for.
Controller options
EBMX X-9000 V2
A 60V-compatible unit programmable through the EBMX app, with a matching heat sink sold alongside it. The default choice, and the one with the most straightforward fitment.
Nucular Electronics performance controller
A programmable 60V controller tuned over Bluetooth through the Nucular Android app, with per-mode acceleration ramp curves, custom regen curves and telemetry logging. It rewards a rider who will actually spend time in the settings; it is wasted on someone who wants to fit it and forget it.
KO Moto Factory Spec Rush
A programmable 60V unit with KO Moto’s own firmware and ramp curves. The simplest way to change the character of the power delivery without learning a tuning app.
Cooling is not optional above Stage 1
The stock heat sink is sized for stock current draw. Feed a high-current controller from a higher-voltage pack and it will thermal-limit on a long climb, which shows up as power fading away rather than as a hard fault. The EBMX X-9000 heat sink adds roughly 30% more convective surface area and clamps directly to the controller housing. Fit it at the same time as the controller, not after the first frustrating trail day. Use thermal compound between the sink and the housing, and re-check the mounting bolts after the first ride.
Warranty consequences
The 12-month manufacturer warranty covers powertrain and chassis. Fitting an aftermarket battery, controller or motor voids factory cover on the powertrain. Frame, suspension, brakes and the rest of the chassis stay covered, unless a failure can be traced back to the modification, at which point cover on that failure goes too.
In practice the decision is: are you comfortable owning the powertrain risk yourself for the remainder of the first year? Riders who upgrade late in the warranty period give up very little. Riders who upgrade in month two are trading meaningful cover for performance.
Choosing a path by rider type
- Casual trail riders: stay at 60V. The stock system is well matched to the terrain and keeps full warranty cover.
- Mixed trail and track: Stage 2 with the EBMX 72V kit. Best return for money and effort.
- Track-focused and aggressive riders: Stage 3 with the X-9000 Power Kit, the heat sink, and a Manitou Dorado fork to make the extra speed usable.
- Race builds: a Nucular or KO Moto controller, a high-capacity pack, KKE or Warp 9 wheels and race-spec rubber.
The honest comparison
A 72V conversion makes an MX3 or MX4 feel like a different bike. It does not turn one into a factory MX5 Pro, and it certainly does not turn one into a Competizione.
The Sting MX5 Pro is a factory 72V machine rated 5.5 kW continuous and 13.4 kW peak, delivering 500 N·m at the rear wheel on a 72V / 40Ah Samsung 50S pack, with suspension and geometry matched to it and the warranty intact. Above that, the Competizione builds run 82V systems making 21 kW (Competizione 50s, 220 Samsung 50S cells) and 23 kW (Competizione 45B, 220 Molicel P45B cells) — purpose-built competition machines rather than converted trail bikes, and they carry build-specific terms rather than the standard warranty.
If that level of performance is the destination, buying it outright is usually cheaper and always simpler than assembling it. The upgrade route earns its place for riders who want to scale performance gradually, who enjoy the build as much as the ride, or who already own the bike and are not going to replace it.
