Talaria Battery Care: Charging Habits That Double Pack Life

Your Talaria battery is the most expensive part of the bike. Ten charging and storage habits — grounded in lithium chemistry — that decide whether it lasts three years or seven.

The battery is 30–40% of your Talaria’s value, and unlike the frame or motor, its lifespan is mostly decided by you. The LG and Samsung 21700 cells in every pack are rated for 500+ full cycles, but real longevity swings wildly with habits. Here are the ones that matter, and the chemistry behind each.

The big three rules

1. Store between 40% and 60%

Lithium cells age fastest at the voltage extremes. A pack stored full for a month ages more than one cycled weekly and stored half-charged. If the bike sits more than a week — and especially over winter — charge or discharge to the middle band first.

2. Stay out of the heat

Heat is the other great cell-killer. Never leave the pack in a hot car or in direct summer sun, and let it cool 30 minutes after hard riding before plugging in — charging a hot pack stacks both stressors at once.

3. Avoid routine 0–100% cycles

Partial cycles are gentler: 20–80% daily use with an occasional full charge before a big ride is the pattern that produces the seven-year packs. Running to cutoff occasionally is fine; making it a habit is not.

Charging practice

  • Use the supplied charger or a properly matched replacement from our batteries and motors range — correct voltage and current curves are what you are paying for.
  • Charge indoors on a hard surface, not on carpet that traps heat.
  • Unplug once full. The BMS protects against overcharge, but sitting at 100% for days is the storage mistake in disguise.
  • Winter riders: charge at room temperature, never below freezing — cold charging causes permanent lithium plating.

Reading the signs of pack health

Voltage sag is your dashboard: if full-charge performance feels strong but the bike goes soft earlier in the ride than it used to, capacity has faded. A pack that suddenly loses large range chunks, heats abnormally while charging, or shows physical swelling has earned retirement — stop using it and talk to us about replacement. Storage checklist (winter or long breaks)

  1. Charge/discharge to ~50%
  2. Remove the pack from the bike
  3. Store indoors, 50–70°F, away from sun and flammables
  4. Top back to ~50% every 8–10 weeks
  5. Full charge the night before the first spring ride
