Shinko SR 241 Trials Tires for Surron / Talaria

The SR 241 is Shinko's trials-pattern dual-sport tyre, built on a heavy nylon carcass in 4-ply tube-type construction. Riders running Talaria Sting, Sting Offroad, Sting R MX4, MX5 Pro, X3 and the Sur-Ron Light Bee X use it where a stock knobby wears out too quickly on tarmac but a road tyre gives up too much in the dirt.

Sizing follows the rim. Stock 19-inch Sting rims take the 2.75 x 19. The X3 and XXX run a 17-inch rim, so the 3.0 x 17 is the match there. If a Warp 9 or similar 18/21 wheel set has gone on, pair the 3.0 x 21 up front with the 3.5 x 18 at the rear. Dragon owners should measure rim width and confirm with their installer, since that chassis runs 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tube tyres from the factory. One caveat worth knowing before ordering: the 2.75 x 19 will not clear a Sur-Ron RST front fork conversion, so an RST front end needs the 3.0 x 21 on a 21-inch wheel.

The trials tread pattern is the reason to choose this casing over a full knobby. It runs quieter on hard surfaces, wears more evenly on pavement and still finds grip on loose ground, while the nylon carcass takes square-edge rock hits that thinner dirt-bike tyres tend to pinch. The tyre carries DOT approval; whether a given bike can be registered for road use is a separate question of local law and paperwork.

Fitting takes roughly half an hour per tyre with irons, or about fifteen minutes on a machine, and calls for bead lube, a valve-core tool and a torque wrench. It is a tube tyre, so inspect the existing tube and replace it if it shows age cracking or old repairs. Balance the wheel afterwards and re-torque the axle nut to the figure in the owner's manual.
