Brakes are the upgrade riders buy last and should buy first — especially on a platform where the community’s favorite hobby is adding power. The good news: the Talaria brake ladder is cheap at the bottom and clearly ordered. Climb only as far as your riding demands.

Rung 1: pads and fresh fluid (the 80% solution)

Most braking complaints on stock bikes are pad compound and tired fluid. Sintered pads bite harder and resist fade versus budget organic ones; a fluid bleed with quality DOT fluid restores lever feel that degrades so slowly owners forget what firm felt like. Do these two before judging anything else — often the ladder ends here.

Rung 2: discs

Larger or better-engineered rotors add leverage and heat capacity — the fix for riders who fade brakes on long descents.
